  • iPad Austin Statesman OFFLINE reading. Good when it works, Bad when it does not.

**5/1/24 UPDATE: Having said all of the following, I started trying to download the 5/1/24 Statesman edition which was showing in Editions about 2:30 AM without success until I tried again about 4:20 AM & was finally able to download both the Statesman & the USA Today 5/1/24 editions for OFFLINE iPad reading; still there is the frustration that something prevented downloading for a paid/ active account & there was no way to resolve it at that point. I will leave the 1-star rating for the time being until I am sure the problem will not reoccur. **5/1/24. I live in another city (about 25 years in Austin) & read the Statesman OFFLINE on my iPad—often in the 2-3-4 early AM timeframe. That is my only use for the paper. I like the Statesman’s duplicate newsprint format rather than the internet info format of other newspapers. **Tonight the 5/1/24 edition shows in the downloadable editions section but when I click for download, text scrolls across the screen saying it is downloading but then it goes to a screen saying Manage Account or Log off. Logging off & back in does nothing helpful. Managing account shows I have an active account which is paid out to 5/16/24. I have verified the 5/1/24 edition has not downloaded when I disconnect from the internet. I tried downloading a new app version but did not find an offline setting & deleted that app. **They have a history with me of having iPad downloading issues but those have been fixed until another like tonight pops up. Want to complain online about a subscription not being delivered, the system says this subscription is not eligible for complaints. Want help from Chat or Phone, not at night; you just have to live with a Bad Product/ No Product until someone wakes up & comes in, in the morning. Want to cancel—not online, have to wait until AM when a phone rep can pressure you not to cancel. **I think that at 8 AM I will cut my losses, cancel & go back to reading books & online items on my iPad. If you intend to read your newspaper on a desktop you are likely OK. Reading OFFLINE on an iPad can be an Iffy situation.
  • Ruined the epaper

Statesman changed app format in March 2024 and ruined the enewspaper. Now when the epaper slowly and hopefully eventually loads which is rarely, it has popup ads on top of it. Mostly for Thomas J Henry. It’s also very difficult to navigate once you have it loaded…..Please bring the old version back!

Most days the enewspaper will not load at all. When it does load, will usually freeze up at some point resulting in iPad not responding to any input. Requires reboot of iPad. Having to click thru pop up ads, in addition to having to scroll through tons of content ads, is super annoying. And then there’s the content - news articles may be published48 hours after the event being reported; example : Saturday football games reported on Monday.
  • New layout is confusing a glitchy

You have done a terrible job with this application. It’s confusing, glitchy and the Thomas J Henry pop ups are extremely annoying. If I have to pay $70/year to read the news, make my time and my money worth something.

I am in Italy and I am unable to access the Statesman, a Gannet owned newspaper. Gannet has newspapers all over the U.S. I am, however able to read the Albany News. A newspaper from Albany, TX, a community with an approximate population of 2,000/2,500. Surely you are able to understand my frustration.

This is a terrible app. Not user friendly. You don’t make it easy to report problems ie with deliveries or request a delivery that has been missed. I pay a lot for this subscription and receive terrible service

The new app is fine for web-type reading but if you want to read a print facsimile , not so good. Often the print is blurry. It says the internet connection ismdown but it seems to work fine for all the other apps on my iPad so it is more likely a server problem. And then there is the comics page. For some bizarre reason I can never get it to flip to second page of the comics! It's as if page D5 does not exist. It consistently jumps from D5 to D7 skipping D6! All in all, I like the old app better.

    Awful!
  • Good Paper, Poor Web Site

Previous web site was stable and easy to use. Current site freezes up, cannot use a page lookup, and reboots regularly. I use an iPad and try to read the paper daily….with mounting frunstation!
